Nodes & Links raises $11M to — maybe — save billions on the big projects the world needs now

Nodes & Links raises $11M to — maybe — save billions on the big projects the world needs now By Mike Butcher Nodes & Links is a scheduling platform for large-scale infrastructure projects which works out when the nuts and bolts for the bridge (for example) should be delivered, and in what order. Unsurprisingly, complex infrastructure projects often get this wrong. The company has now raised an $11 million Series A funding round led by urban sustainability-focused fund 2150 , alongside Zigg Capital and Westerly Winds, with participation from existing investors Entrepreneur First, ADV and Seedcamp. Launched in 2018, the company’s Aegis platform is used by Balfour Beatty, Costain and BAM Nuttal, and claims to have delivered millions in cost savings on infrastructure projects, because the building materials and assembly ends up being organized in the right order. Given that most major projects run significantly over time and over budget, scheduling correctly can make a huge di

Qualcuno sta cancellando i dati dai dischi My Book Live di Western Digital connessi a Internet. Scollegateli By Paolo Attivissimo (noreply@blogger.com) Da alcuni giorni, chiunque abbia un disco rigido esterno My Book Live o My Book Live Duo della Western Digital sta sudando freddo. Punto. Si tratta infatt

VividQ, which has raised $15M, says it can turn normal screens into holographic displays By Mike Butcher VividQ , a UK-based deeptech startup with technology for rendering holograms on legacy screens, has raised $15 million to develop its technology for next-generation digital displays and devices. And it’s already lining up manufacturing partners in the US, China and Japan to do it. The funding round, a Seed extension round, was led by UTokyo IPC, the venture investment arm for the University of Tokyo. It was joined by Foresight Williams Technology (a joint collaboration between Foresight Group and Williams Advanced Engineering), Japanese Miyako Capital, APEX Ventures in Austria, and the R42 Group VC out of Stanford. Previous investors University of Tokyo Edge Capital, Sure Valley Ventures, and Essex Innovation also participated. The funding will be used to scale VividQ’s HoloLCD technology, which, claims the company, turns consumer-grade screens into holographic displays. Foun

TikTok deleted over 7 million accounts supposedly belonging to minors

Immagine
TikTok deleted over 7 million accounts supposedly belonging to minors By TikTok may be known for its young, viral dance craze-loving user base...but you still have to at least pretend to be 13 years or older to use it. On Wednesday, TikTok, the viral video app that blew up in popularity during the pandemic, released its first transparency report of 2021. The report covers the first 3 months of the year. While TikTok has released these reports before, which detail how the company deals with various forms of policy-breaking content, there was a "first" this time around. "For the first time, we're publishing the number of suspected underage accounts removed as we work to keep the full TikTok experience a place for people 13 and over," TikTok says in the report. And the number of accounts removed here is certainly eye-opening. Of the 11,149,514 (yes, that's more than 11 million) accounts removed for breaking the service's community guidelines or te

You're using your air fryer all wrong

Immagine
You're using your air fryer all wrong By The name "air fryer," frankly, is a misnomer. A brilliant marketing tactic, but a misnomer, nonetheless. An air fryer doesn't fry. Not really. You’ve heard of air fryers. Hell, how could you not know about them at this point? If you’re on TikTok you’d need an air fryer to make nearly every other recipe produced in the last year. But when you hear air fryer, you might, naturally, think of, well...deep fried foods. Onion rings, mozz sticks, wings, and the like. That's the power of marketing. And if there's anything Americans love, it's taking something decadent and wonderful, then watering it down so it can be consumed in large quantities. As Michael in TV's The Good Place once said of frozen yogurt vs. ice cream: "There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it." That is the ostensible promise of an air fryer: OK, so it won’t be fri

Twitter now lets you set a security key as your only two-factor authentication method

Twitter now lets you set a security key as your only two-factor authentication method By Jay Peters Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge In March, Twitter said it would soon let you use a security key as your only two-factor authentication method, and on Wednesday, it announced that feature was live on both mobile and web. Being able to use a security key as one of your two-factor authentication methods isn’t new, but now you can make it the only one, if you want to. Physical security keys have advantages over other two-factor methods like an authenticator app or SMS because they don’t rely on a code that a bad actor could intercept. Now security keys can be your one and only two-factor authentication method on mobile and web. Google Photos for Android prepares to add a homescreen widget for your Memories

Immagine
Google Photos for Android prepares to add a homescreen widget for your Memories By Mishaal Rahman Back in October, Google released an update to the Google Photos app for iOS that added a homescreen widget. This widget cycles through the “Memories” albums that Photos automatically generates. On Android, Memories are visible at the top of the “Photos” tab, but Google is preparing to let users see them on the Android homescreen through a widget — just like on iOS. An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build. Version 5.49 of the Google Photos app is rolling out on Android, and a quick look through the APK reveals that a widget is being prepared.  New strings reference a “Google Photos widget”

Watch the first five minutes of Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy

Watch the first five minutes of Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy By Ian Carlos Campbell Image: Netflix Netflix has shared the first five minutes of its upcoming horror movie trilogy Fear Street , inspired by R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series of young adult novels. The film trilogy, which will be released over three Fridays starting on July 2nd, is also split across three separate time periods: 1994, 1978, and 1666. Teens fleeing for their lives is universal, regardless of the year, it seems. Here’s Netflix’s synopsis for the films: In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. As someone who grew up on Goosebumps and marathoned the made-for-TV movie adaptations of the books every Halloween, Fear Street seems like a pretty great update on that vibe. These first five minutes aren’t super scary, but they do translate some classic slasher movie tropes i

Which model iMac should I buy: Price, configurations, colors, and more By Kunal Khullar Apple’s new 24-inch iMac was refreshed at its Spring event earlier this year as an all-purpose PC for the masses. It’s now powered by the M1 Silicon, Apple’s ARM-based processor that currently powers the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13, iMac mini, and even the new iPad Pro 2021 . The new iMac also gets a much-needed design refresh where Apple is offering the machine in seven different colors in a sleek and slender design. If you’re planning to buy one, there are some important things to consider and we’re going to list all the differences so you can make an informed decision. Before we list the differences, let’s take a look at all the common features on the new iMac that are available across variants. The most obvious one is the chipset, the M1 Silicon, Apple’s first ARM-based microprocessor that’s based on TSMC’s 5nm process. According to Apple, it has the world’s fastest CPU core in low power si
